Recovery logistics
You do not need a clean apartment, a solved calendar, or a convincing speech before you ask for treatment.
A short checklist for taking the first practical step into care.
Start by calling SAMHSA at 1-800-662-HELP or searching FindTreatment.gov. Ask the provider what level of care they recommend and what they need from you before arrival.
Questions for a program
- Do you accept my insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, or self-payment? Is there a sliding scale?
- Do you provide medical assessment and withdrawal support?
- Can you treat mental-health conditions at the same time?
- Are medications used when clinically appropriate?
- What are the rules for phones, visits, work, smoking, and prescribed medication?
- What happens after discharge, and who schedules the first follow-up?
Bring or record
Photo identification and insurance information if available; current medications and doses; allergies; major medical conditions; emergency contacts; recent hospital or treatment information; and essential phone numbers written on paper. Ask before packing valuables, supplements, tobacco, or over-the-counter medicines.
Child care, pets, work, court dates, and housing are real barriers. Tell the referral service or program about them. Call 211 for local support with food, housing, transport, utilities, and other basic needs.
